The Unspoken Pitch
A brief primer on non-verbal communication

August 11th, 11:30am - 1:00pm
Location: TBA

We have all been taught that non-verbal communication makes up roughly 70% of all conversation. But rarely do we take the time to consider what we're saying without our words. Join us August 11 at 11:30 when Dr. Mark Hickson of UAB provides us with an intriguing look at the nuances of how we communicate without words.

Mark Hickson, III holds the Ph. D. in Communication from Southern Illinois University. Prior to arriving at UAB, he taught communication and public relations at Mississippi State University. His interest in nonverbal communication began more than 35 years ago, when the study was in its infancy. Since then, he has published several articles and co-authored 5 books on nonverbal communication. The most recent is published with Allyn and Bacon (Boston), and he expects the sixth to be published by Oxford University Press later this fall.

While nonverbal communication is a significant area of research for Hickson, he has also published two books in organizational/administration communication as well as books on small group communication and public speaking. He has edited three different academic journals, for a period of 12 years. In July, his book, Crime and Deviance in Colleges and Universities, will be published by Charles C. Thomas, Publishers. In May, he was named a Centennial Scholar in Nonverbal Communication by the Eastern Communication Association, at its annual meeting in Philadelphia.
